A Journey of Healing and Advocacy

In 2007, following a failed suicide attempt and feeling isolated by bipolar disorder, I joined the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). Together with a small group of dedicated individuals, the DBSA Northridge Chapter at Northridge Hospital was started to create a safe, supportive space for those struggling with mental health challenges.

My journey to this point was shaped by profound experiences. As a combat motion picture cameraman in 1972, I faced intense pressures, and in 1973, while stationed in Germany, I returned home after losing my mother to suicide. Over the next 25 years, I built multiple companies and maintained a high-energy lifestyle, which, in hindsight, was fueled by undiagnosed bipolar disorder, mania, substance abuse, and multiple suicide attempts. Although I was hospitalized in 1979, I wasn't diagnosed with bipolar disorder until 2001.

Despite medication, I continued to struggle with depression. The turning point came in 2007, leading to my involvement with DBSA. DBSA Northridge connected me with compassionate peers from all walks of life, offering acceptance, empathy, and a sense of purpose. This community became a vital source of hope and healing for me and countless others.

Wishing you a peaceful journey,
